Jawaharlal Nehru University – An Overview
Written by admin on November 24th, 2010Jawaharlal Nehru University, commonly known as JNU was established in the year 1969 with main purpose of promoting research work at post graduate level. The University is located south west of New Delhi near the Aravalli forest and is spread about in 1000 acres. The University was names after the former Prime minister of India Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and was established by Smt. Indira Gandhi. G.Parthasarathy was appointed as the First-Vice-Chancellor of the university. The main aim for the establishment of the University was to enhance the education standard in India and to provide more opportunities to the youngsters of india.
The present Chancellor of the University is Professor Yashpal and Vice-Chancellor is Professor B.B.Bhattacharya. There are 500 faculty members in the University and with the student strength of almost 5500. The University is UGC recognized University. The various schools of the University which have their own center are School of Arts and Aesthetics, BioTechnology, Computer and Systems Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Information Technology, International Studies, Language, Literature and Culture Studies, Life Sciences and Physical Sciences. Some special centres in the University are Center for the Study of Law and Governance, Molecular Medicine, Sanskrit Studies and International Trade and Development. The university conducts many cultural events also.
The institute that are affiliated to the University are Central Drug Research Institute (CDRI), Lucknow, Centre for Development Studies (CDS), TrivandrumCentre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB), Hyderabad, Central Institute of Medicine and Aromatic Plants, Lucknow, College of Military Engineering (CME), Pune, C.V.Raman Research Institute, Bangalore, International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB), New Delhi, Institute of Microbial Technology, Chandigarh, Military College of Electronics and Mechanical Engineering (MCEME), Secunderabad, Military College of Telecommunication Engineering (MCTE), Mhow, Naval College of Engineering (NCE), INS Shivaji, Lonavla, National Institute of Immunology (NII), New Delhi, Nuclear Science Centre, New Delhi, The National Defence Academy, Pune and The Army Cadet College, Dehra Dun.
The University has made collaboration with Ankara University, Turkey, Australia National University, Canberra, Australia, George Washington University, USA, Gyeongsang National University, Korea and many others foreign institute.
The University has the habit of producing great personalities. Some of them are Prakash Karat, General Secretary, Communist Party of India (Marxist), Ashok Tanwar, President Indian Youth Congress and many other renounced personalities in every field.
