Botox injections are used as a non-surgical method to take care of wrinkles. Botox is used by people who want to stay younger looking for longer. Botox continues to become a popular way to treat wrinkles. Botox has been around for a while and was given FDA approval in April 2002 to treat moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows. However, Botox can also be used for other parts of the face.

The most popular use of Botox is to use it to smooth the lines in the forehead,? crow’s feet (lines around the eye) and frown lines, called glabellas lines, which are the tell tale signs of aging.

How does Botox work?
Botox is actually a substance called Botulinum Toxin which originates from the bacterium Clostridium Botulinum. Where the substance is injected into the muscles it blocks transmission between the nerve endings and the muscle fibres causing weakness of the nearby muscle. This will temporarily reduce the tightening of the facial muscles which lead to frown lines.

Botox is completely safe and can be done very quickly in about ten minutes. You do not need any anaesthetics and discomfort is minimal. The Botox is given to you through several very small injections into the muscles on your face. The injection area is decided on by assessing your ability to move certain muscles in your forehead.

How long does Botox last?
After your Botox injections results can take between three and seven days to become apparent and you will see the effects of the treatment last for between 4 and 6 months. Results can vary from person to person but this is the average time frame. Botox does not last forever and is a procedure which you will need to repeat if you want to keep the effects long term.

You will know when the Botox has worn off because you will notice the frown lines in your forehead begin to re-surface. After four months you can get another set of Botox injections. If you repeat the treatment over time thinning of the muscles occurs and you will begin to experience longer lasting results as the muscles learn to relax.

If you are considering Botox injections you should not be pregnant or breast feeding so make sure you tell your Botox nurse if you are trying for a baby.
